A Cold War Memoir from Nuclear Crisis to Senior Federal Law Enforcement Officer is the compelling, true story of Bob Hicks’s decorated 43-year career in U.S. national security. This essential Cold War Memoir offers a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective on defending the nation.
The book vividly chronicles Hicks’s path from a young Airman to Chief Master Sergeant and elite Senior Federal Law Enforcement Officer (OSI). It details the high-stakes nuclear crisis at Ellsworth AFB, where Hicks had to devise a recovery plan for a detached nuclear warhead, cementing his mantra: “Failure is Not an Option.”
The narrative spans his work in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), three years undercover with the FBI exposing defense contractor fraud, combating terrorism in Germany (Ramstein bombing), and recovering hundreds of millions lost to contractor deceit on the B-2 Stealth Bomber program. A testament to courage and integrity, this book is a must-read for fans of military history and true espionage.
Posted on Bill JamesVerified After reading I feel purposefully, gratefully patriotic. I feel safe, thankful for Bob’s commitment. Failure Not An Option. Bob Robert Hicks memoir took me two sittings. Hometown boy done good.Several days later I still feel… good. I feel purposefully, gratefully patriotic. I feel safe, thankful for Bob’s life commitment to our country. And the others like him.Recently I attended his induction into the Air Force OSI Hall of Fame, where his numerous under-cover successes were honored. I’ve known about his preventing and resolving a nuclear accident in a missile silo in South Dakota when he was in the Air Force at age 19. I didn’t know the detail of his and Janet’s commitment and sacrifice that led to his lifetime series of successes and “saves” and their impact on our country. His upbringing and character resulted in much of his work being above his grade and being called back after retired. Congrats Bob on your solid service. I sleep well.Posted on Janine HicksVerified A worthwhile read. Now having read actual accounts of his life and career, I couldn’t be more proud. I feel the things unsaid could fill a book as well. What integrity and what grit Bob Hicks has had along with Janet fulfilling a lifetime of commitment for a worthy cause.Posted on John AVerified An engaging read outlining what true commitment to our nation and family looks like! If you’re interested in learning about the exceptional individuals who make up our military—particularly those who serve in the United States Air Force—this book is an excellent and engaging read. It offers a thoughtful look at the career decisions made along the way and, just as importantly, the impact those decisions had on family life at each assignment. That perspective adds depth and authenticity to the story, reminding the reader that service is never borne by the individual alone. What I appreciated most is how the book illustrates the journey of an ordinary Airman repeatedly confronted with extraordinary circumstances, and consistently rising to meet the challenge. The narrative makes clear that leadership, resilience, and character are forged through experience rather than bestowed by rank. From Airman to Chief Master Sergeant, and then continuing service as a civilian from GS-12 through GS-15, SA Hicks’ career was dynamic, diverse, and compelling. His story highlights the breadth of opportunities available within the Air Force and demonstrates how a commitment to service can extend well beyond uniformed duty. This book is both inspiring and informative, and it provides valuable insight into what a truly dedicated career of service can look like.Posted on Todd HoweVerified Good read Robert Hicks did a great job of detailing his life in the book on his career in the Military and non-military life. He deserves a hand for his accomplishments.Posted on Philip guzmanVerified The authors path through his Air Force and Law enforcement careers.
